Can political parties’ activities boost democracy?

By:-Chairman Manyang Parek von Chief Parek

Miracles happen when the public stage a revolution against bad leaders who have failed to govern the nation peacefully and harmony in unity based on democracy according to Christian ideology, values and moral ethics. This happens when people are concerned mostly about their country’s welfare to an extent risking their life for the nation. That makes them take right decisions to stage a social revolution in order to free their nation from bad rulers which saves the soul of the mother land not to drift into anarchy and turmoil. Their main aim of staging a protest is to over-turn the politics for the better aspirations for their country. As their fundamental is one that has motivated them from time to time to take a stand and act against corrupt, abusive and autocratic government. They want rule based democracy. And this is why, it is easy to understand why democracies, are on average richer than non-democracies, are less likely to go to war and have better record of fighting corruption. Though infrequent, they have always happened and may continue to happen—as long as we live and interact as human being. More fundamentally, democracy lets people speak their minds and shape their own children’s futures. That by itself so many people in so many different parts of the world are prepared to risk so much for this idea is testimony to its enduring appeal. In South Sudan, Miracles of the kind mentioned above may not have happened before. This is no longer the case. There is billowing smoke that a miracle is expected to happen sooner or later in the political landscape of our country. Adversaries are expected to come together and work together in building the nation which they have after all failed to build together when they are comrades under one roof. Many believe it would be a miracle for such adversaries to work together and build a nation which they did not, when they were friends. But we know that good people can do good and bad people can do evil. Because of that, a divine miracle form a strong presumption which is termed as supernatural or being miraculous. View it this way; it is a miracle when all the people in a team are in good terms with each other. It come about as it is a responsibility of the leader to make sure that all of them are comfortable with each other in order to have a working relationship that makes a team a productive one instead of a team that is wracked by conflict and wars which creates disharmony in the society and system of governance. The positive and the negative traits of each leader, some similar qualities which can be detected were confidence, hard work, risk taking, and communication skills. Follow the passion they displayed towards realizing their purpose. This passion is overarching quality in achieving their purpose politically in terms of power. The greatest difference among leaders comes from the goals they would wish to achieve with their skills. Thus, charismatic leaders are proof as exceptionally self-confident, strongly motivated to attain and assert influence, and have strong conviction in the moral correctness of their beliefs. In this aspect situation theory states that different situations demand different kinds of leadership who could be reckon with and accepted by the people. Transformational leadership is of course a process that changes and transforms each individual’s leaders in the country. It is concerned with emotions, values, ethics, standards and long-term goals, which include assessing followers motives, satisfying their needs, and treating them as full human beings at the same level. In other words, transformational leadership involve an exceptional form of influence that moves flowers to accomplish more than what is usually expected of them. It is a process that often incorporates charismatic and visionary leadership. Motivational leadership is an aspect of charismatic and transformational leadership. With the fact that leaders are obviously made when individuals work towards developing a certain set of qualities and behaviors and consider the circumstances which involve followers at hand in the end.   In spite in modern societies, the process of political opinion—building is polymorphic process which pass through many different forms of colors or radiation containing more than one wavelength or stages which has to be always acknowledged as that happen in a democratic society. These take places where the communities are mostly Christians based orientated in political aspect and in terms of parties that are operating in the nation. Where ever citizen engage within a party exercise some influence on the political decision—making process.

In this view, politics is the process to organize how we live together in a society. So political programmed remain a merchandise of a party, which is offered to the voters. Indeed, the party program fulfill two main functions: on the one hand, they shall articulate the interests of the population as parties or organs of the people and on the other hand, they are oriented and influence the opinions of the citizens whether as parties as the former according the public will. Thus, aspect of the party programs is where the voters can evaluate whether a party has sufficient sensibility for societal problems as the best way of proposing adequate suggestions as a resolution of standing problems and challenges that need great attention to be addressed in time by the leaders.

Therefore political parties are presented as central institutions of modern democracy. In a democracy, every citizen can participate in this process—by freely accessing information about political issues, by openly expressing their own opinion on public affairs, by formulating expectations, proposals or requirements without fear of repressions, by voting in elections, by engaging in civil society organizations or political parties, or by standing up as a candidate in democratic elections.

Without political parties, a modern representative democracy is not conceivable. Only, the parties ensure that the citizens are permanently capable to act politically. They articulate and integrate different interests, visions and opinions. They are also the main source for the recruitment of political elites. But in order to participate successfully in elections, the political parties have to be the voice of broad sectors of society. Associations, social organizations or citizen’s initiatives normally concentrate more on individual and a limited scope of issues. Political parties, in contrast, are expected to take positions on all those questions and topics that are related to public order and the organization of society. Parties are competing amongst each other for the best ways of resolving political vision it is not possible to organize a society. Internal discussions and conflicts within, as well as between, the parties accompany this contest for ideas and power. They are legitimate and essential.

Whereas oppositional parties always have the function of criticizing the government, control it and put up constructive ideas. This function become a great significance for democracy, because without opposition a government tends to drift towards complacency, presumptuousness and fails to search for alternatives. In this aspect, political parties are providing important services for the democratically organized society. The quality of the delivery—that is the way they comply with their functions—contributes decisively to the reputation and the potential of the political parties.

In conclusion, few years ago democracy looked as though it would dominate the world at large. But poor leadership with military power, it has become a political nightmare to the citizens all over the world. These political forces with religious extremism have in fact caused serious conflict resulting to crisis and violence leading to war and death of poor citizens in many different countries. This happen even in established democracies as flaws in the system have become worryingly visible and disillusion with politics is rife. Indeed, the biggest challenges that are being faced by democracy, however, neither come from above nor from within—from the voters themselves. Because the internal makes it easier to organize and agitate in a world where people can participate in reality by voting during elections.
